Usually when we take on a new task or we finally decide to achieve our goal, we experience that feeling of a new charge. A lot can be accomplished if we are motivated, and to stay motivated is essential to achieving success.

We are so motivated and energized that we want to keep working at it non-stop until we’ve achieved the desired result. H

owever, over-time we tend to lose steam.

We start to experience drag and lack of enthusiasm unlike when the moment when we started. If you’ve been experiencing this and you feel it’s a bad thing, I want you to know that even the high achieving people feel it too, it’s natural to lose steam over time as a human.

In this post I will be sharing with you some of the things that cause you to lose motivation and the exact steps on how to stay motivated.

WHY DO WE LOSE MOTIVATION?

As we progress through a task, most times the reason why we lose motivation have internal sources, on the other part, the external sources complements and gives us a reason to go along with what we think.

Some of the reasons why we lose motivation include:

  • Lack of enthusiasm/Interest
  • Being Alone
  • Being overwhelmed
  • Fear and Doubt

  • The thought of people’s opinion

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED

Study have shown that our source of motivation changes as we make progress toward a goal. Our source of motivation changes as we progress towards achieving our goal.

In the beginning, we might be motivated by the reward of achieving the goal. For example, if you are planning on building a house of your own, in the beginning you might be motivated by the joy of owning a home. But as you progress, your source of motivation might be the fact that you no longer want to pay rent, you might start picking motivation from some of the things achieving your goal will prevent.

Source of motivation as found generally tend to move from reward based to preventive reasons.

WAY TO STAY MOTIVATED INCLUDE:

  1. LET THE END-RESULT MOTIVATE YOU

    Keeping an eye on the bigger picture enables you to overlook the difficulty of the process, off the lesser ‘not so interesting part’ of the process. Let the end goal motivate you, you know why you started and you know the results you desire. Visualization is a surefire way of letting your goals motivate you.

  2. TAKE BREAKS

    Engage in extracurricular activities like sport, games, anything that interests you. Don’t hesitate to catch some fun, this allows your brain to relax a bit and when you resume your task you feel refreshed and your energy is renewed. Don’t forget no to waste too much time doing that!

  3. REWARD YOURSELF FOR YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

    New Research Suggests Frequent Rewards Can Improve Motivation, Performance at Work  that’s according to a recent study by Cornell researchers Kaitlin Woolley and Ayelet Fishbach published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
    In the study, they found that people who received frequent reward for completing tasks reported more interest and enjoyment in their work compared to people who received reward only at the end of the long project.
    Additionally, they found out that the former category of people who received frequent reward remain interested and motivated in their tasks.Rewarding yourself for a completed task increases your motivation to complete another one.So next time when setting your goals, you might want to include a reward program so as to increase your chances of staying motivated.

  4. AFFIRMATION TECHNIQUE

    Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes in your life.
    These words we tell ourself impacts our subconscious mind, they are positive messages we pass on to our mind, and they help us overcome internal & mental limits and they allow us to maintain intrinsic motivation.

    • Set your desired goal.
    • Write down why you want to achieve them.
    • Write down the exact steps on how you will achieve them.
    • Write down the result of achieving the goals.
    • Read what you’ve written down anytime you notice you are losing motivation.

     

  5. MAINTAIN A LASER FOCUS 

    Focus is one of the key to achieving success, without focus, a goal will never be achieved. To maintain focus, you might want to avoid/eliminate distraction, track your tasks with a to-do list and divide activities into smaller chunks. Don’t be overwhelmed by the complexity of the bigger picture, breaking it down into smaller pieces will help you to maintain focus.

  6. DO THINGS ONE STEP AT A TIME

    Multitasking in a bid to achieve more in a less time doesn’t allow you to have a laser focus on the current task, this affect how productive you are and in turn influences the progress of achieving the goal. When a task is taking much more longer than it is expected, you might start to get tired and lose motivation, so instead outsource tasks or combine and work on groups of related tasks.

  7. REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED

    As simple as it looks, tapping into the experience of the reason why you started might bring back that energy you felt back then. Reminding yourself of the reasons why you’ve decided to accomplish something

  8. BE GRATEFUL OF WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED

    Successful people are grateful people, gratitude leaves us in a good state of mind. The spirit of gratitude gives you power to accept the reality, be thankful of your achievements, this will give you motivation to keep going.

  9. LET GO OF PERFECTION

    I understand what it feels like to live a perfect life and do things perfectly. It’s interesting to wish for things to fall in the right place at the right time.
    Unfortunately, as humans we are not made to be perfect. You should let go of the need to do all things perfectly, it’s good to do things close to perfection, but it’s okay too if everything isn’t 100% perfect. Don’t force yourself do be perfect, this might leave you dejected in the long run.

  10. FIND MOTIVATION OUTSIDE

    You might not always be in a good, sometimes you don’t find motivation within. Worry less, the internet has made it possible to find motivation with just a few clicks.
    For me, listening to great speakers and people who have achieved success in their career or life leaves me with nothing but the zeal to get back to work. I tap into their energy and experience and it’s exciting to be able to look at my present situation from a new perspective.

  11. JOIN RELEVANT COMMUNITIES

    This is very similar to what we just finished discussing, joining relevant communities like social media groups, masterclasses, clubs etc are a great place to find motivation.
    Interacting with people of like minds and surrounding yourself with positive thinkers allows you to tap into positive energies that inspires you. This is a sure way of finding inspiration.

  12. LIVE WITH PURPOSE

    Living a life of purpose and having this responsibility towards something helps you stay motivated. A life of meaning and purpose attracts positivity into your life, the purpose makes you dedicated towards achieving your goals.
